A guestpost made on MelloWantsMore.

(Hello all, my name is Dimitri. I am an ex-collague of Mello and a Cryptocurrency/Blockchain educator. I have been invited by Mello to make a small guest post and talk about a topic of my own choosing. )

In todays guest post I want to talk about innovation and the relationship between Cryptocurrency and fashion.

On the surface it might seem that these topics have nothing to do with each other right?

On the contrary, blockchain technology is being introduced in this market in a variety of ways. Big names such as Louis Vuitton are getting involved in the digital world. You might be surprised to learn that the aforementioned has been involved with the gaming industry for some time now. A partnership was instignated and for the popular game “League Of Legends” were special “skins” developed for players to buy and use in-game.

This was but a beginning. Fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton and the luxury house Dolce&Gabbana have begun delving deep into the realm of blockchain and started creating virtual assets, the so called “NFTs“.

( NFTs is shorthand for “Non-Fungible Tokens”. They are digital files saved to the blockchain and can be bought and sold like other Cryptocurrency. One of their major strengths relies on “Proof of Ownership”. If you own an NFT you will truly own it and no one else can lay claim to it. It is unique in every way.)

Louis Vutton created their game called “200 Anecdotes” in commemoration for their 200th anniversary. Within the game are 30 NFTs available for viewing of which 10 were created in collaboration with the famous Crypto Artist “Beeple“. 200 Anecdotes is thus a blockchain based game.

Dolce&Gabbana announced making their own NFTs available on the Polygon blockchain.

The fashion magazine Vogue made an in-depth report about this decision. The report makes mention that D&G will make their Venice-inspired collection available as NFTs.

Other brands also made mention of indulging into the Crypto market.
Gucci also is making strong moves into the gaming industry and the world of NFTs according to yet another report by Vogue Business. This time a headline whereby Gucci has said “it will be a matter of time before releasing an NFT themselves“.

Speaking as an educator on the matter I can still say we are VERY early to the development and innovation of the NFT-market. While it is heart-warming to see big luxury houses taking their first steps of discovery in this wild digital world, a lot of potential is still dormant.

Luckily are there pioneers such as “Clothia” making their collections already known on the blockchain.
Dresses and collections which CAN be bought by buying their issued NFTs. A revolutionizing manner of bringing fashion about. Their NFTs up for sale can be found here.

Why this focus on fashion and blockchain? What has it got to do with each other?

Recently did Mark Zuckerberg announce big plans concerning the metaverse.
The metaverse can best be seen as the digital world (such as when gaming) but whereby interactions can have real life results. Socializing in the metaverse means making connection with people over vast distances. To interact with each other as if on a real life basis. Keyword where it concerns metaverse is “immersion”.

With it comes the idea of a digital identity. An identity you create, mold and shape. That you can dress.
NFTs and blockchain play key roles within the metaverse. As humans we pride ourselves on our unique identities. We pride ourselves on the ideas we stand for. We fashion and want to express our identity.

Future-wise is the metaverse gaining more and more importance. Our digital identities a way to express ourselves to the great wide world and we want to look good doing it.

It is innovation at its best. A movement which should be kept a close eye on as it is rife with opportunities for both designers as well as graphic designers. It is a brave new world ready for the taking.

Thank you all for reading.

With kind regards,

Dimitri.
