To understand #Web3 is to understand the history of the internet and how, through major adoption, big issues became prevalent in its quest to remain “free” and unbiased.

To understand what #Web3 entails is to understand what “web1” is. To understand the history of the internet. To condense the pages long history of the internet: It started with the idea of “free and unbiased communication”. Objective and free communication.

Web1, the very first iteration of “the internet”, dates back to the 1970-80ies.

Web1 was a static internet. Users only had the possibility to verify and look-up data for use. There was no 2-way interaction. You went to a website, looked-up the information and that was it.

Early 1990-ies and 2000 you had the rise of WEB2.0 An interactive internet. It not only allowed research to be done (looking up information), it also allowed for communication. People can share data. They can alter data. They can talk with each other.

Web2.0 saw the rise of social media.

The very first, and early, forms of social media were:
– chat websites
– forums
– blogs
– search engines

Web2.1 (2000s) saw big social media COMPANIES rising.
#Myspace
#Facebook
#Netlog
#Wordpress
#Vampirefreaks
#Redbox
-..

2000s and 2010s did the internet start to change once again. Internet-companies started to monopolize. Buying up smaller social media websites and companies and establishing monopolies. 1997-2000s saw the .com-bubble which was driven by this monopolization.

A VERY painful truth came surfacing. A truth which sparked the creation of #Bitcoin and #Blockchain . That of censorship.WEB2, the interactive internet, with all of its monopolizing companies (Yahoo, google, facebook,…) became HEAVILY biased. Something we still see today in the form of censorship, shadowbanning, ghost banning or outright removal. “Agreements” you sign-off to before subscription.

Innocent at first glance… but it effectively restricts speech and opinion. Something which goes AGAINST the foundation upon which the internet was incepted. With the creation of #Bitcoin and importance of #Blockchain does the idea of a #Web3 arise.

A #Decentralized internet.

A decentralized and uncensorable internet. The current problem of WEB2 (which we all know) is one of censorship. Special interest groups (journalists and media) pushing narratives. Political groups BUYING algorithms to spread and enforce THEIR message. WEB2.0 is RIDDLED with narrative. Algorithms on social media which feed you with information “which you like” and “which is approved”. Making it difficult to research “controversial” topics. To find unbiased studies. All steered by few approved keywords.

The reason WEB2 (our current internet) became this way was due to the aforementioned monopolization. The internet is heavily centralized in a few MAJOR companies (big tech). This means it stands open for adjustment and bias. The idea of a #Decentralized internet is one of “peer-to-peer” communication. A return to more organic interaction. Interaction whereby communication with opposing views is left open. Where people can speak freely (no matter how inane their opinion and views). This is #Web3.

It is built on the foundation of its predecessors but REMOVES the flaws present. It allows for uncensored communication. This is a natural evolution of the internet. It is a something which has been in demand since web2.0 began! It only needed maturation.

What about #Metaverse ? A metaverse is heavily linked with #Web3 but in reality is more of a “final form” of web2.0. The final form of an interactive internet is one of an IMMERSIVE internet. Digital world made manifest in reality. #Metaverse and web3 are interlinked in the sense that web3 allows for TRUE free and uncensored speech. You can never be fully immersed in a #Metaverse if censorship is present. It detracts from immersion in a parallel digital world. The final form of web2 is where web3 begins
