The Nerdminer-family:

From left to right: Nerdminer Micro, Nerdminer V2, NerdAxe
Last year, I made an entry on the Nerdminer and dedicated some time to explain the power of lottery miners. This entry can be found here: “Bitcoin Mining, smaller is better“.
The main points made in said entry were:
- Lottery miners help more distribute hashrate globally
- In their own small way, they help contribute and secure the Bitcoin network
- They are called “lottery miners” as the chance (or ROI) of them is extremely small
Investing in a lottery miner means helping out securing the network.
It is a cool, small educational gadget which helps onboard people into the whole idea of Bitcoin Mining.
Why the review, why the focus?
For the same reasons as in the introductory paragraphs and retaken in the entry about lottery mining.
The Specs
We are dealing with 3 different small miners with rather low hashrates. They are not as performant as the other Bitmain Antminers (and others of their ilk) but these do have advantages over them. Mostly in regards to:
- Power consumption
- Ease of setup
- Educational
- Low cost

The Nerdminer Micro:
The Nerdminer Micro is the smallest of the trio.
- Hashrate: has a theoretical maximum of 50khs (KiloHashes per second) .
- Power consumption: 0.3 Watts
- Size: 5 × 3 × 1 cm
- Weight: 0.1 kg
This is the cheapest and smallest Bitcoin miner available. Its power consumption is LOWER than the NerdMiner V2 due to not needing a ventilator and lack of screen.
Educational wise is this the easiest to set up. Connect with Wifi, fill-in your BTC-address and keep it plugged-in.
Nerdminer V2
The Nerdminer V2 is the “granddaddy”. The one which started it all. This little miner is what kickstarted the 2023 OpenSource mining revolution which eventually gave rise to the Bitaxe and its many variants with ongoing tweaking and development.
- Hashrate: has a theoretical maximum of 70khs (KiloHashes per second) .
- Power consumption: 1 Watt
- Size: 5 x 5 x 8 cm including fan
- Weight: 0.3 kg
This little miner was mostly developed as lottery-miner and as an educational tool. Setup is as easy as the Nerdminer Micro (which was based on the V2). A full setup guide can be found here.

NerdAxe
The NerdAxe is the next upgrade from the NerdMiner. The Nerdminer V2 gave rise to further development of the Bitaxe and its many variants. Bitmaker (the original developer of all Nerdminers) took it one step further and combined the power of the Nerdminer V2 with that of a Bitaxe. As a result was the NerdAxe born.
- Hashrate: Reaches <500 GH/s
- Power consumption: 12 Watts
- Size: 10 x 6.5 x 6 cm including fan
- Weight: 0.4 kg
This little miner was mostly developed as lottery-miner and as an educational tool. Setup is as easy as all previous Nerdminers. Due to being combined with a Bitaxe will it need a more powerful 5V DC power supply. A full setup guide can be found here.
Power to the plebminers!!
What makes the Nerdminers stand out is their “gadgetry” feel while effectively contributing (in small yet increasingly important parts) to the Bitcoin Network. Each and every NerdMiner (and its variants) as well as each and every Bitaxe (and its variants) in use contributes in a decentralized way. The low costs and low energy consumption means helping to safeguard the network while being not profit-based. It is pure cypherpunk in the way that only YOU have total control and are not dependent on returns to keep it running.
The importance of lottery-miners, or plebminers, has recently been highlighted by a historical first for the entire OSMU (Open Source Miners United) community when a Bitaxe solo-mined its very first block. This event can be seen through the Blockchain explorer when searching for block 853742. This historical event highlights the very definition of “lottery miner”. Chances might be extremely small but a jackpot CAN be hit!
